Shi Kon Community Outreach Programme

Shi Kon Martial Arts has worked with outreach programmes since its inception as a Martial Arts club by Steve Rowe now 8th Dan in 1976 as a part of the Takamizawa Institute of Karate and becoming Shi Kon Martial Arts as an International association in 1988 buying its own headquarters and full time training centre in Chatham in 1996, becoming a City & Guilds accredited Coaching centre for NVQ’s and gaining Sport England and Medway Council’s ‘Clubmark’ Accreditation in 2010 through to this present day. The club and association has produced many champions in several arts and won many awards over the years with branches and seminars in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Portugal and Ireland.

The club based in Chatham currently has a student base of around 300 students, half at the full time centre and the other half in outreach programmes. It has a very diverse student base from all nationalities and a gender split of 50/50 male and female including the teaching staff with many female black belts and high grade teachers. In both the children and adult student base and teaching staff they have a wide variety of special needs.

The list of work over 40 years is too long to list but very recent and current programmes include:

  • Tai Chi and Qigong in the Rochester and Victory Care dementia homes in Rochester and Chatham
  • MEND graduates for 7 – 13yrs families to explore healthy lifestyles and for being active and give confidence and self esteem.
  • Kung Fu programmes for children with a variety of special needs
  • Tai Chi and Qigong for groups in Age Concern and the University of the 3rd Age

All Shi Kon coaches are Sport England ‘Clubmark’ and British Council for Chinese Martial Arts accredited, are at least black belt standard and are also:

  • Level 2 Coaches
  • First Aid qualified to HSE standard
  • Child Protection qualified
  • Carry individual Professional Indemnity insurance
